Why student can use Cloud Computing?

Students; a population on the move, travelling back and forth from their home to university, high school… They fluently speak the language of presentations, working in group and being organized. But how do they organize their documents? How do they work in group and share documents?
Instead of synchronizing their documents in the cloud, they send them to their e-mail address. That’s understandable. It is an easy and cheap way to get your files synchronized. But do you really want to let others have a look at your personal e-mail folder when you’re waiting for your presentation to download while the beamer is on?
Another common practice is students working with a USB-stick. But what if you need to save a presentation with 10 high res pictures? Ever tried it before? Chances are rather small you had enough space to do so. And what if your USB-stick crashes?
Another common practice: you need to work in group and share documents. Students tend to use e-mail addresses to send a pile of messages with big attachments. If you are working offline and you want to have a look at a document a fellow students has made, basically you’re screwed. Other situation:  you download the attachment, make some changes and send it again to the group, but somebody has been working in the original document, so suddenly you have two files. Panic and stress!
If you put your files in the cloud, you can work on them whenever and wherever you want. And they get synchronized so others always get the latest version of the document.
So students, why do you choose to use your e-mail address as a cloud computing service? Or why do you worry where to save that presentation you need to give?  Give the cloud a chance, you’ll be surprised about its possibilities and how much time and worries it will save you!

Cloud computing has its risks and disadvantages, however. Its dislocated nature, which is an advantage in many cases, can also be disadvantageous because the user loses control over the software application and becomes dependent on the provider to maintain, update and manage it. If something goes wrong, the user does not have direct access to the software and must depend on the provider to fix the problem. If the provider is unresponsive or unable to fix the problem quickly, the user can experience significant issues. For example, problems would occur if your company uses a cloud-based payroll software system and that system goes down the night before payroll is due. These problems would quickly become much worse if the provider is unwilling or unable to fix the problem and reliable backup services are not available. Similarly, if your company becomes dependent on a cloud-based software application and the provider is unable or unwilling to continue to provide that application, you will quickly encounter trouble. This trouble would quickly become more serious if the provider was not required to give notice of the cessation of the application in time to allow your business to locate an alternative. In today’s turbulent economic climate, cloud providers may encounter financial problems or bankruptcy, either which could seriously impair or eliminate the provider’s ability to continue to provide the cloud services to your company.  Remember that these financial problems can happen quickly, and you will often have limited recourse in these situations.

Cloud computing can also bring substantial risks in the privacy and confidentiality areas. By using a cloud system, your company’s sensitive data and information will be stored on third-party servers, and you will probably have very limited knowledge or control regarding this information. If the provider has inadequate security or encryption systems or procedures, or if a breach of these systems or procedures occurs for any reason, your company’s private and confidential data may become compromised. This could have devastating effects, and could cause legal problems for your company if third party confidential information (for example, customer information) is compromised.

I recently started leading a new multi-national research project about Mobile Cloud Computing, it’s development, impact and potential opportunities for communication providers (telecoms). It seems to me that Mobile Cloud Computing is going to become increasingly important in the the near future in terms of providing browser based access to more and more cloud-based applications and services. Instead of downloading and installing applications on the mobile handsets (smartphones, tablets, etc.) users will access them directly in the cloud and display through the mobile browser, i.e. analogous to Software-as-a-Service provisioning. Some predictions include:
In Gartner’s 2010 key IT predictions for organizations, mobiles phones are expected to overtake PCs as the most common Web access device worldwide by 2013.
ABI Research predicts that there will be nearly one billion end users accessing the “mobile cloud” by 2014. Smartphone applications will move from the handset itself to the cloud – creating a ecosystem for new kind of smartphones – sometime termed “Mobile Cloud Phones”.
There are many reasons for this to materialize. For example, developers are increasingly discontent by being forced to develop and maintain applications that are exclusive for certain mobile phone platforms, e.g. iPhone, Android. This is both costly and limits developers to adhering to the rules of the platform owner – and, sometimes a limited market segment. Many users are also frustrated to have no choice but purchasing a powerful, and more often expensive, smartphone to have the possibility of running mobile apps.
It is clear that with the emergence of the iPhone and the App store, there is already a huge supply of applications avilable. However, most of these applications require users to download them to the handset, install them and run on the handset. Concequenlty, smartphones are becoming increasingly advanced and powerful, embodying sophisticated computing architecture and operating systems. The best analogy could perhaps be the Wintel cooperation – whereas a new version of Windows OS required the user to upgrade to a more powerful Intel processor.

Cloud Computing is an execution of compute jobs in multi-tenant elastic environment, where jobs may dynamically scale up or down requesting/releasing resources on a fly. Owner of the process is billed only for used capacity.
